This Day in Poker History

January 25 has seen some unforgettable milestones in poker history, from iconic tournament victories to record-breaking achievements. Let’s take a closer look at two significant events that occurred on this date and left a lasting impact on the poker world.

Jake Cody’s Road to the Triple Crown Begins (2010)

On January 25, 2010, Jake Cody captured the poker world’s attention with his victory at the European Poker Tour (EPT) Deauville Main Event. This win not only earned him €847,000 but also marked the beginning of his journey toward the prestigious poker Triple Crown—winning an EPT, a World Poker Tour (WPT), and a World Series of Poker (WSOP) title.

At just 21 years old, Cody demonstrated poise and skill far beyond his years, navigating a tough field of 768 players. His aggressive yet calculated style of play was on full display as he battled his way to the final table. Cody’s heads-up duel against fellow Brit Michael McDonald was one for the books, as he maintained relentless pressure to secure the win.

But Cody wasn’t done making history. Just eight months later, on September 4, 2010, he won the WPT London Poker Classic, pocketing £273,783 and adding another jewel to his Triple Crown quest. The crowning moment came on June 4, 2011, when Cody claimed his first WSOP bracelet in the $25,000 Heads-Up Championship for $851,192. Completing the Triple Crown in just over 16 months, Cody holds the record for the fastest completion among the elite nine players who have achieved this feat.

Cody’s meteoric rise and groundbreaking accomplishments have cemented his legacy as one of the most talented players of his generation.

Bryan Sumner Wins the World Poker Open (2007)

Three years earlier, on January 25, 2007, Bryan Sumner etched his name in poker history by winning the World Poker Open at the Gold Strike Casino in Tunica, Mississippi. This event, part of the World Poker Tour (WPT) Season 5, featured a star-studded field and a $10,000 buy-in, attracting some of the game’s biggest names.

Sumner’s road to victory was no easy task, as he faced fierce competition from elite players, including poker superstar Daniel Negreanu. The final table was packed with drama, with Sumner making bold moves and capitalizing on key hands to rise above the rest.

The heads-up battle against Negreanu was particularly intense, as the two players exchanged blows in a contest of skill and wits. In the end, Sumner emerged victorious, claiming the top prize of $913,986 and the WPT title. Negreanu, while falling just short of the win, added another impressive runner-up finish to his storied career.

The World Poker Open remains one of the iconic stops in WPT history, and Sumner’s triumph on that day stands as a testament to his poker prowess.
